Cardinals down North, fall to Williamsburg

DES MOINES — The Newton volleyball team split a road triangular for the second time this season on Thursday.

The Cardinals faced Class 3A Williamsburg and 5A host Des Moines North and split the two matches. All three matches for the night resulted in sweeps.

Newton downed Des Moines North 25-12, 25-16 but lost to Williamsburg 25-14, 25-23.

It was the Cardinals seventh straight sweep over the Polar Bears (2-14). Isabelle Rawlins led Newton with 23 assists, two kills and six digs.

Morgan Frehse totaled nine kills, two digs and three aces, Addy Cibula put down seven kills, Camryn Klein chipped in four kills and two digs and Ellie DeVries and Emmy Gross each tallied three kills.

Faith Roffey contributed five digs, Olivia Bell had three digs and Sophie Greer added two digs.

The Cardinals were 45-of-49 in serves with three aces. Rawlins was 9-of-9 and is now 178-of-181 on the season.

Newton’s kill efficiency was .279. Klein made one error in 13 hitting attempts and Cibula had two errors in 14 attempts.

In the loss to Williamsburg (18-8), Frehse totaled 11 kills and five digs and Klein finished with nine kills and eight digs.

Frehse leads the Cardinals with 192 kills and is tied for the team lead with 25 aces this fall, while Klein has a team-best 118 digs and is tied with Frehse with 25 aces.

Rawlins chipped in 21 assists and two digs against the Raiders, Greer posted seven digs, Merissa Schiebel tallied five digs and Bell collected two digs.

Newton (10-12) was 35-of-37 in serves with one ace. Rawlins served 9-of-9, Klein was 8-of-8 and Greer finished 7-of-7.

The Cardinals’ kill efficiency was .233. Frehse made four errors in 30 attempts and Klein had one error in 19.

Newton hitter Addie Ratcliff, who came into the night with the second-most kills on the team, left the Williamsburg match early due to an injury and did not return the rest of the night.
