PERRY — Five individual wins, a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard butterfly and two relay victories propelled the Newton girls swim team to a win over Perry on Tuesday.
The No. 23 Cardinals tallied seven of the 11 wins in the head-to-head competition and downed the No. 39 Bluejays 88-74 at the McCreary Community Building.

Newton won the meet by double digits despite not having the services of Reid McCloud due to an injury.
Oskaloosa also was supposed to compete but pulled out of the scheduled triangular.
Harper Barton led the Cardinals with four wins, Tori White was part of three and Alexa Van Maanen had the other individual win.
The Cardinals were 1-2 in the 200 freestyle relay and 1-3 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Barton, Van Maanen, Julia Nedder and Temple Barton won the 200 freestyle relay in 1 minute, 51.34 seconds.

Peyton Phillips, Brilea Moffitt, Kimberlee Miller and Emalee Weuve finished second in 2:03.04.
The winning 400 freestyle relay team featured Temple Barton, Miller, White and Harper Barton and they finished the race in 4:00.55. It was not Newton’s best time of the season, but it would rank 26th in the state if it was.
Phillips, Nilaya McConnell, Moffitt and Lillian Pifko took third in 4:51.07.
The 200 medley relay team of White, Van Maanen, Nedder and Weuve placed second in 2:04.8.
Harper Barton and White both won two individual races. The Cardinals were 1-2 in the 100 butterfly and 1-3 in both the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.

Harper Barton won the 200 freestyle in 2:01.67, which puts her in the top 30 in the state. She was nearly 42 seconds ahead of the runner-up, but Perry finished 2-3-4 in the event.
Harper Barton’s other win came in the 100 breaststroke. She won the race in 1:10.02, which ranks 12th in the state. Van Maanen placed third in 1:21.1.
Van Maanen was the 200 individual medley winner. She hit the finish line in 2:37.43.
White led the 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly and the 1-3 finish in the 100 backstroke. She won the 100 butterfly in 1:06.41 and Nedder was second in 1:09.64.
White’s winning time in the 100 backstroke was clocked in 1:04.84. Weuve finished third in 1:14.62.

Temple Barton (58.24) and Miller (1:04.52) were 2-3 in the 100 freestyle, Nedder (29.53) took second in the 50 freestyle and Phillips (6:36.62) placed second in the 500 freestyle.
Notes: Phillips, McConnell, Moffitt, Torrie Van Kley, Madison Scott, Amiya Amos and Jordyn Ryan all won an individual JV event. Phillips (2:47.75) was the JV 200 IM winner, Ryan (3:32.69) won the JV 200 freestyle, Amos (40.68) swam to a win in the JV 50 freestyle, McConnell (1:24.51) won the JV 100 butterfly, Scott (7:52.12) was victorious in the JV 500 freestyle, Moffitt (1:23.73) secured a win in the JV 100 backstroke and Van Kley (1:34.16) claimed a win in the JV 100 breaststroke.
