Relays headline Newton’s day at Tiger Tankers Invitational

White, Barton lead Cardinals at West Des Moines Valley

WEST DES MOINES — The Newton girls swim team faced three teams in the top 10 of the Bound power rankings on Saturday, and the Cardinals secured 10 top-10 finishes at the Tiger Tankers Invitational.

Newton scored 138 points and placed sixth in the eight-team field. Top-ranked Dowling Catholic won the meet with 275 points.

The rest of the top five included No. 2 Waukee Northwest (246), No. 12 Sioux City Metro (200), No. 8 and host West Des Moines Valley and No. 21 Council Bluffs Lewis Central (146).

The Cardinals were better than No. 22 Grinnell/BGM/Baxter (119) despite the Tigers finishing 1-2 in diving. Atlantic (32) completed the field in eighth.

Newton’s top finish came in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Cardinals were second in 3 minutes, 47.94 seconds with Harper Barton, Tori White, Temple Barton and Reid McCloud.

That quartet was involved in most of the top-10 finishes for the day.

The group also placed fourth in the 200 freestyle relay as McCloud, Temple Barton, White and Harper Barton completed the race in 1:43.9.

Newton was fifth in the 200 medley relay. The team of Emalee Weuve, Alexa Van Maanen, Julia Nedder and Kimberlee Miller posted a time of 2:06.16.

White was the top individual finisher as she was third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.69. She also was seventh in the 200 individual medley in 2:25.98.

Harper Barton placed fourth in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. She posted a time of 24.98 seconds in the 50 freestyle and then swam 54.58 in the 100 freestyle. The winning time in the 50 was 24.58 and 51.9 won the 100 freestyle.

McCloud finished fourth in the 500 freestyle. She was clocked in 5:28.27.

She also led a 5-8 finish in the 200 freestyle. McCloud was fifth in 2:01.61 and Temple Barton took eighth in 2:05.77.

Notes: Camryn Russell, a senior from Baxter, won the 1-meter diving competition with a season-best score of 477.95. ... Newton does not have times posted into Bound yet, but Harper Barton has reached the state qualifying time standards in the 50 and 100 freestyle. The 5:28.27 McCloud posted in the 500 freestyle ranks 21st in the state. … The Cardinals’ 3:47.94 in the 400 freestyle relay sits 11th in Iowa and their 1:43.9 in the 200 freestyle relay is eighth. … Brilea Moffitt had a 12.7-second time drop in the 100 backstroke on Saturday. Torrie Van Kley posted a time drop of 5.23 seconds in the 100 breaststroke and Jordyn Ryan’s freestyle anchor leg in the medley relay was a 4.1-second time drop. … Newton is ranked at the bottom of the Bound power rankings because no times have been put in yet.
