Mount Vernon eliminates Newton girls tennis in regional quarterfinals

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon stayed unbeaten and eliminated the Newton girls tennis team from regional play on Saturday.

The Mustangs swept the Cardinals in all five matches of their Class 1A Region 8 quarterfinal matchup during their 5-0 home win.

Postseason matchups end when a team reaches five wins. The final singles match was not completed and no doubles matches were played.

Ava Williams fared the best among Cardinals. She lost her No. 4 singles match 6-4, 6-3 and Makenzie Clark lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

Brooklyn Sterling and Kaetlin McPartlin both lost their first sets 6-3 at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

Camryn Andrew dropped her first set 7-5 at No. 6 singles, but her match was not completed.

All four quarterfinals in 1A Region 8 ended 5-0. Xavier downed Oskaloosa, North Polk defeated Des Moines Hoover and Pella Christian swept Saydel.

Mount Vernon (10-0) advanced to the regional semifinals and will play No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in Cedar Rapids.

The Cardinals (1-9) have been eliminated from postseason play but will make up a dual against Des Moines East at 4 p.m. on Monday in Des Moines.
