Hawks win third straight game, down Bears on Homecoming

SULLY — The Class A District 6 football contest between Lynnville-Sully and BGM was even for three quarters on Friday.

But a dominant second frame propelled the Hawks to a 41-20 Homecoming win over the Bears.

It was Lynnville-Sully’s third straight win overall and the third consecutive win over South Iowa Cedar League rival BGM. The Bears are 7-4 in the series since 2010.

The Hawks have scored at least 36 points in all four games this season. The 41 points scored against BGM were the most for L-S in the series since 2010.

Dawson James made his varsity debut at quarterback. He threw for 159 yards and three touchdowns on six completions and gained 103 yards and added one rushing TD on 16 carries.

James replaced Connor Deal, who is dealing with a few minor injuries. Deal was 4-of-6 through the air for 45 yards and one interception.

Gavin Fisk rushed for 79 yards and two scores on 10 carries and his only catch resulted in an 11-yard touchdown.

Homecoming King Jack Bowlin grabbed six passes for 155 yards and one TD, Landyn Fisk hauled in one pass for 37 yards and one TD and Bowlin returned a kickoff 31 yards.

BGM (2-2, 1-2) led L-S 7-6 after one quarter. L-S won the second half 14-13 but outscored the Bears 21-0 in the second quarter.

Landyn Fisk’s 37-yard TD catch from James came in the first quarter. James added a 5-yard TD run, an 11-yard TD pass to Gavin Fisk and a 75-yard touchdown strike to Bowlin in the second.

Gavin Fisk ran for a 44-yard TD in the third and added a 1-yard TD run in the fourth.

L-S had a 13-9 advantage in first downs. Both teams committed 11 penalties for a total of 180 yards.

James led the Hawks’ defense with 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one fumble recovery.

Wyatt Mathis posted six tackles, Michael Spooner totaled four tackles and one interception and Henry Sharp chipped in 4.5 tackles.

Landyn Fisk and JD Richards contributed three tackles each, and Bowlin registered 2.5 tackles. Richards also averaged 25.5 yards on his two punt returns.

Beau Burns led the Bears with 209 passing yards and three TDs. He tossed one pick and ran for 86 yards on 25 carries. Landon Hassett added nine catches for 142 yards and one TD.
