Cardinal swimmers cruise past Oskaloosa

Newton wins 10 events against rival Indians

A 10-victory night powered the Newton girls swim team to a home win over Oskaloosa on Tuesday.

The Cardinals finished 1-2-3 in four events, went 1-3 in a pair and the Cardinals defeated the Indians 110-50 at the Newton YMCA.

Harper Barton, Tori White, Reid McCloud and Alexa Van Maanen all were part of three wins, the first three finished second in another event and Temple Barton, Kimberlee Miller, Emalee Weuve and Julia Nedder also swam on a winning relay team.

The Cardinals opened their night with a win in the 200-meter medley relay. The team’s only foursome in the event was Weuve, Van Maanen, Nedder and Miller, and they won the race in 2 minutes, 4.69 seconds.

Oskaloosa finished 2-3 in the event, but the Indians runner-up team was more than 12 seconds back of the winners.

The same foursome joined forces in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay. The only difference was the order.

Harper Barton, White, Temple Barton and McCloud won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:57.66, and Oskaloosa’s runner-up team finished the race in 2:03.88.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Harper Barton and McCloud switched spots, but the Cardinals were second in 4:24.05. The team of Miller, Lillian Pifko, Brilea Moffitt and Peyton Phillips took third in 4:35.79.

Oskaloosa’s only win came in the 400 freestyle relay, and the Indians posted a time of 4:08.3.

Harper Barton’s other wins came in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

She won the 50 freestyle in 28.19 seconds and Nedder was third in 31.83.

Harper Barton’s winning time in the 100 freestyle was clocked in 1:01.49. Temple Barton (1:06.02) and Weuve (1:11.95) were next in second and third, respectively.

White claimed victories in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, while McCloud swam to wins in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle.

White won the 100 butterfly in 1:13.99 with Nedder (1:20.03) and Nilaya McConnell (1:34.57) placing second and third, respectively.

White led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 backstroke. She won the race in 1:11.75 and Weuve (1:29.16) and Moffitt (1:30.58) took second and third, respectively.

Alexa Van Maanen

McCloud’s first individual win came in the 200 freestyle. She won the race in 2:16.93. Temple Barton (2:22.87) was second and Phillips (2:42.61) placed third.

Before anchoring the 200 freestyle relay team to a win, McCloud was in the pool a few minutes before for the 400 freestyle. Newton had the only two swimmers in that event and McCloud led a 1-2 finish in 4:53.31. Phillips placed second in 5:41.

Van Maanen won the 200 individual medley in 2:56.17. It was the only individual event Newton didn’t have multiple swimmers in the top three though.

In the 100 breaststroke, Van Maanen won the race in 1:28.96 and Torrie Van Kley finished third in 1:41.67.

Notes: The Cardinals had the deeper roster and controlled all of the junior varsity events. Josalyn Cervantes (37.45) and Madison Scott (39.94) went 1-2 in the JV 50 freestyle and then reversed the order in the JV 100 backstroke with Scott (1:38.58) winning and Cervantes (1:42.33) finishing second. Newton also had the only JV team in the 200 medley relay and the foursome of Cervantes, Van Kley, McConnell and Kadie Andersen finished with a winning time of 2:58.54.
