Cardinals’ matchup with Saydel was suspended due to darkness

DES MOINES — Sloan Brodersen was part of half of the wins recorded by the Newton girls tennis team on Monday, but the Cardinals lost a tiebreaker in doubles action by the slimmest of margins and fell to North Polk, 5-4, at Saydel High School.

North Polk defeated Saydel 7-2 earlier in the evening, but Newton’s match with the Eagles could not be completed due to darkness.

The Cardinals’ matchup with North Polk came down to the final match on the court, and the team of Kaetlin McPartlin and Ava Williams fell 9-8 (7-5) at No. 2 doubles.

The matchup featured six singles matches and three doubles contests. Each match was one super set.

The Cardinals split the six singles matches. Brodersen won 8-2 at No. 2 singles, McPartlin got an 8-5 victory at No. 3 singles and Camryn Andrew won 9-8 (7-3) at No. 6 singles.

Brooklyn Sterling

Brooklyn Sterling and Brodersen teamed up at No. 1 doubles and claimed an 8-4 win, but North Polk (5-7) was 2-1 in the three doubles matches.

Newton (1-8) was without No. 1 singles player Morgan Frehse due to injury. According to Newton head coach Erick Zehr, Frehse will not return this season.

The Cardinals compete in the individual portion of regionals at 9 a.m. on Wednesday in Pella. The state-ranked Pella Dutch host the Class 1A Region 4 tournament at Caldwell Park.
