Newton girls tennis finishes sixth at LHC tournament

Williams, Andrew team up to place fourth in doubles

INDIANOLA — Playing without its No. 1 player, the Newton girls tennis team won just one match at the Little Hawkeye Conference tournament on Thursday.

Cardinal seniors Ava Williams and Camryn Andrew won their quarterfinal match in the Flight 2 doubles bracket, but the Cardinals finished sixth in the seven-team field with 16 points.

Williams and Andrew placed fourth at Flight 2 doubles, while seniors Brooklyn Sterling and Sloan Brodersen finished sixth at Flight 1 doubles.

Junior Kaetlin McPartlin and sophomore Makenzie Clark both were sixth in their singles brackets. Junior Morgan Frehse was not available due to injury.

Class 1A No. 3 Pella won the conference championship with 46 points.

Pella Christian, Norwalk and Indianola tied for second with 36 points and Dallas Center-Grimes (18) finished fifth. Oskaloosa (10) was behind Newton in seventh.

Part of the difference in the final two spots in the standings was the win Williams and Andrew got against Oskaloosa in their opening-round matchup.

Williams and Andrew, seeded fourth, downed fifth-seeded Kylie Owens and Addison Landers of Oskaloosa 6-3, 6-3 at Flight 2 doubles.

The Newton duo lost to the eventual champions from Pella in the semifinals and dropped a 6-4, 6-1 match to the third-seeded team from Pella Christian in the third-place match.

Sterling and Brodersen were seeded fifth and finished sixth at Flight 1 doubles. They fell 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals to the fourth-seeded team from DCG and then lost 6-3, 6-4 in the fifth-place match to the seventh-seeded team from Pella Christian.

Sloan Brodersen

McPartlin lost 6-4, 6-0 to Pella’s Ellie Smock in the quarterfinals. She was seeded fifth but placed sixth after losing in the fifth-place match.

Clark was the fourth seed in the Flight 2 singles bracket. She lost 6-2, 6-2 to fifth-seeded Lexi Branderhorst of Pella Christian in the quarterfinals and then dropped a third-set tiebreaker to sixth-seeded Lydia Pogany of Oskaloosa in the fifth-place match. Pogany won the match 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6).
