Newton volleyball splits pair of matches at Grand View Christian triangular

DES MOINES — Morgan Frehse led a balanced attack at the net, Camryn Klein had the best varsity match of her career so far and the Newton volleyball team rallied past Grand View Christian during a road triangular on Thursday.

The Cardinals split their two matches, taking down the Thunder 19-25, 25-17, 15-10 and falling to North Polk 25-13, 25-11.

Frehse put down a career-high 16 kills in the win over Grand View Christian. It was her fifth double-digit kill output in the team’s nine matches, and she leads the squad with 81 kills.

Frehse added two blocks and seven digs, Isabelle Rawlins had 30 assists, two kills and four digs and Klein posted career highs with five kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Klein leads the team with 51 digs.

Addie Ratcliff totaled five kills and three blocks, Faith Roffey contributed eight digs, Addy Cibula put down four kills and Sophie Greer and Merissa Schiebel each collected five digs.

The Cardinals (6-3) were 54-of-54 in serves and are now 351-of-372 for the season. That’s 94.4 percent accuracy from behind the service line.

Newton also finished with a kill efficiency of .361 and registered a season-best 10 blocks.

The Cardinals and Thunder (5-2) have split the past five matchups. Newton also won 2-1 in 2019 and 2020 after Grand View Christian won in three sets in 2018.

In the loss to North Polk, Rawlins had 12 assists and four digs and Frehse posted six kills and three digs to lead the Cardinals.

Klein chipped in six digs, Schiebel had four digs, Ratcliff put down three kills and Greer contributed two digs. Newton was 23-of-25 in serves.

North Polk was led by Jaslyn Rasmussen’s five kills and four digs and Ava Koudelka chipped in nine digs. The Comets (5-6) were 43-of-45 in serves.
