Hawks lose to Bears by slimmest of margins

BROOKLYN — Double-doubles from Tatum Huyser and Kate Harthoorn were not enough for the Lynnville-Sully volleyball team against BGM on Thursday.

The visiting Hawks played the Bears as close as possible in a three-set match but lost 25-23, 26-24, 25-23 in South Iowa Cedar League play.

The Bears outscored L-S by six and missed two fewer serves than their opponent. BGM served 70-of-74 and totaled five aces, while the Hawks finished 62-of-68 in serving with three aces.

Lynnville-Sully is 17-12 against BGM since 2008, but the Bears are 2-0 against the Hawks this year.

Huyser and Harthoorn led the Hawks (2-4, 0-1 in the SICL) with double-doubles. Huyser finished with 10 kills, 22 digs and three blocks and Harthoorn totaled 19 assists, 15 digs and two kills.

Olivia Beyer tallied a career-best 37 digs, Morgan Hay posted a career-high 14 digs and Ava Brummel chipped in six kills and 11 digs.

Brooke Hardeman contributed 12 digs, Penelope Robinson registered four kills and nine digs, Brilynn Tice and Rhylee Rodgers tallied three digs and Addison Callum dished out three assists. It was the varsity debut for Rodgers.

Hardeman led the Hawks in serving at 13-of-13. Huyser was 9-of-9 and Robinson finished 16-of-17.

BGM (3-0, 1-0) got seven kills and 20 digs from Emersyn Minnaert and seven kills and 12 digs from Mya Beck. Shaye Strong chipped in 26 digs and was 16-of-17 in serves.
