Rebounding, defense help L-S boys edge English Valleys

Late free throws secure Hawks’ SICL home win

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s boys’ basketball team made some late free throws during a 40-36 home win over English Valleys on Saturday.

The Hawks led after each quarter and won the South Iowa Cedar League game despite shooting just 24 percent from the floor.

“Neither team played great, but both teams battled hard,” L-S boys’ coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We were able to get the lead late and knock down some free throws.”

L-S was 10-of-15 from the free-throw line, while English Valleys made just 3-of-6.

The Hawks (7-4 overall, 7-2 in conference play) led 10-9 after one and 21-18 at halftime. English Valleys got within two after three but an 11-9 advantage in the fourth secured the Hawks’ fourth straight victory.

Mason Rodibaugh had a team-best 11 points and added five rebounds. Corder Noun Harder chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and five assists, Conner Maston had seven points and nine boards and Preston Rodibaugh finished with seven points, six rebounds and three steals.

Klayton Van Dyke added four points, four rebounds and three blocks, Ryan Annee pulled down five boards and Matthew Egging grabbed three rebounds. The Hawks out-rebounded English Valleys (10-4, 8-4) 42-34.

“It was good to get a solid win by rebounding and playing tough defense,” Harthoorn said.

Kaden Hall led English Valleys with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
