3 Great Health Habits for Seniors

Newton Village - 3 Great Health Habits for Seniors

As you age, certain aspects of your life become more important than ever. For a great start towards achieving a long and happy life, follow these three great health habits for seniors.

1. Nutrition. A diet rich in nutrients will help keep your body, including your immune system, strong. A heart-healthy diet can help keep your cholesterol at a manageable level, and may help you maintain a healthy weight. Lowering sodium intake is beneficial for many seniors.

Vitamin D is also very important as you age. It can help you maintain bone health and may prevent bone and muscle damage if you fall. Good sources of Vitamin D include salmon, canned tuna, egg yolks, mushrooms, and milk. Getting direct sunlight also increases Vitamin D levels in the body. Confirm your nutritional needs with your doctor before making any changes to your diet.

2. Exercise. Staying active is extremely beneficial for seniors. If possible, try to get 30 minutes of physical activity five days a week. Consistent exercise can improve your mood and even increase the type and amount of exercise you’re capable of. From a very low-impact activity like tai chi or armchair yoga to power walking or swimming, exercise is one of the best things you can do for yourself as you age.

3. Social and mental stimulation. Keeping your mind active is very important; creative and social activities can help lower stress, and you’ll have events to look forward to. Keep your mind engaged by learning new skills, taking up a new hobby, taking classes, playing card or board games, and reading. Be sure to maintain your social relationships with family and friends.

Don’t forget to maintain well visits with your doctor, and get recommended screenings. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night; as seniors age, losing sleep can lead to health concerns, like an increased risk of falling and daytime fatigue.
