Newton Police Department

• Danny G. Petro, 39, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse assault and interference with official acts at 6:50 p.m. March 19 in the 400 block of East Second Street South. According to the criminal complaint, the Newton Police Department was dispatched to the 500 block of First Street South in reference to a disturbance in the street. Upon arrival, officers made contact with Petro and the victim who advised that Petro had pushed her and pulled her hair. A witness told the NPD they had observed Petro push the victim to the ground. Petro began walking away from the scene. Officers made contact with him in the 400 block of East Second Street South. When he spoke to police, he denied assaulting the victim. Officers advised him that he was under arrest, but Petro resisted officers, not allowing them to place him in handcuffs. Officers repeatedly requested he put his arms behind his back but Petro failed to comply with police’s commands and physically resisted officers efforts to place his hand behind his back. Petro was taken into custody and transported to the Jasper County Jail. At his initial appearance, he was fined $250 for the interference of official acts charge and sentenced to two days in jail for the domestic assault. He served his time and was released.
