Market bound

PC Farmer’s Market back each Thursday evening at Garden Square Park

The start of summer means Thursday nights at Garden Square Park are buzzing with activity. The Prairie City Farmer’s Market is back from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and filled with fun and tasty foods and goods with something for everyone.

“So far, we are seeing crafts of all kinds, produce (onions, squash, tomatoes, etc), honey, home baked breads, pies and cookies, and so many other things,” co-market manager Tabbatha Miller said. “As the season goes on, we expect to see different fruits and vegetables, more homemade goods and goodies and everything we are already enjoying. We also have a Scentsy rep as well as a Norwex rep. Justin’s Easy Spark Firestarters has also been a big hit! Oh, and I can’t forget the food trucks.”

Like in years past, the market is partnering with the Prairie City Public Library for special events perfect for families. Last week the ISU Insect Zoo stopped by and it is planned for the Blank Park Zoo to hang out for an evening along with other fun activities.

While it is early in the season and gardens are still working hard to produce fresh fruits and vegetables, Miller said she expects the market to only grow as the year goes on.

“We are gaining more vendors and with each week, I feel we will see more people venture our way. If only the sun would cut us a break,” Miller said. “So far turn out has been pretty great.”

While every week at the market is exciting, Miller is really looking forward to the food trucks that will be open for business throughout the summer. Serving up tasty food perfect for dinner, the trucks make the market even more special and a destination for the evening.

“I would have to say our food truck game will be pretty strong this year. I am looking forward to seeing the crowds for those,” Miller said.

After a year without gathering and with many restrictions in place, getting back to a little more normal this summer with vendors lined up along the sidewalks, eager to show off their work, is a welcome sight. Hopefully as the season continues, the market will keep growing with more people enjoying it along the way.

“My favorite part of market is the connections, if that makes sense? Our vendors are pretty regular and it has been great to see them showing off their goods and then seeing visitors pick over the variety of items,” Miller said. “I genuinely love to see everyone just enjoying themselves for the short time we have together every week.

“Oh, and shopping! Supporting local is always my favorite!”
