I saw in the news that Casey’s, in anticipation of some penny shortage in the far future, will begin rounding down to the nearest nickel the total bills for customers paying in cash. I always use mobile pay, so why am I being asked to pay the full amount? Not that a couple cents either way will send me into the streets, but this move by Casey’s seems like a vast overreaction to a scenario that is a long way off.
According to a report from the U.S. Mint, there are currently around 300 BILLION pennies currently in circulation in this country. I doubt we’ll see any penny shortages anytime soon.
This seems like much ado about nothing.
