Letter to the Editor: ‘My Fair Lady,’ one of the very best

Letter to the Editor

Hundreds of words could be used to describe this latest production at our Newton Community Theatre, but they could be summed up with these three ... fantastic, spectacular, unforgettable!

My heartiest congratulations to the dozens in the cast, the crew and the marvelous orchestra, which performed miraculously throughout this fast-moving, three-hour, once-in-a-lifetime performance. In all the years of attending our Newton Community Theatre, I cannot recall any play that was better performed from beginning to end!

My involvement with our Newton Community Theatre goes way back to 1963, when the first productions were held in the Maytag Hotel Ballroom, with minimal equipment, but with an abundance of enthusiasm. My dear late wife and I attended most every performance, until she took the Golden Highway to Heaven on July 19, 2002. She loved the theatre and we never missed two or three performances in Chicago or New York a couple times each year.

Due to heavy business travels in years past, I was unable to be involved in many theatre productions, but I well remember being in the cast of “Oklahoma” twice in 25 years and will never forget the great time we had in “Carousel,” another one of the best. I also served a couple unforgettable terms on the theatre board way back when.

What has always amazed me is the dedication to our theatre by dozens and dozens of individuals over the years. Many of the old timers are no longer with us. But the great crop of dedicated folks of today, such as this cast of dozens, are simply amazing and for such a worthy cause.

If a pre-performance could somehow be broadcast over our television, there’s no question that our theatre would be fully packed, to overflowing on each performance. There are three great performances again this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Even those who rarely attend our theatre should definitely turn out for “Our Fair Lady.” It is indeed one of the best of the best!
