Letter to the Editor: Lenten season begins

Lent — the season of repentance and fasting by many Christians throughout the world that will be observed this year from Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22 - April 8.

In New Orleans they celebrate Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday” with a rather wild night of celebration and the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the fasting of the Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday.

Here at the First Christian Church in Newton, we will celebrate Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, with a free-will offering pancake supper prepared by Cub Pack #356. We invite you to join us starting at 6 p.m. at 314 E. Second St. N. No crazy costumes or colorful beads needed. (All proceeds will go to Cub Pack #356.)
