Letter to the Editor: Getting back to our progressive roots

For those of us who still believe in the “Common Good,” I’m listing my favorite publications as an antidote to the lies, propaganda and hate on TV and social media.

1. The Progressive Populist put out by the Cullen family of Storm Lake. Includes articles by Dean Baker, Thom Hartman, Robert Reich and many other progressives. 1-800-732-4992

2. The Week - U.S. and World News. Best cover art, best coverage of everything. www.theweek.com/service

3. The New Republic - articles such as “The Greatest Threat to the Country is the Class Divide” and “We must fight for a better America. We have no choice.” 1-800-827-1289

4. The Hightower Lowdown - Insights such as “Through a series of mergers and predatory power grabs during the last three decades, a handful of global meatpacking conglomerates now control the sole (and pricing) of beef, pork and poultry in the U.S.” Think JBS, Tyson and Cargill and Smithfield. 1-877-747-3571 or subscriptions@hightwerlowdown.org.

5. For Tweens age 9 to 12 - The book “You are your own best teacher” by Claire Nader. $25. Essential Books, P.O. Box 19405, Washington DC 20036. For more information visit www.inspiringtweens.com.

As someone who loves Iowa and people here, I’m hoping we can get back to our progressive roots.
