Letter to the Editor: Proud of my coach

I’ve known Erick Zehr for 12 years. He was my tennis coach at Newton High School where he led my doubles partner and me to the state tournament … only three years after I picked up a racquet for the first time. I admire Erick for his strong leadership skills and ability to connect with people individually. Both on and off the court, it has always been apparent how much he cares for the players on his teams and the community he’s raising his family in.

As Erick’s family grew, I babysat his three boys, was impressed with his family’s values, and leaned on him for support and mentorship both in college and later on in the working world. Erick and his family always go above and beyond for others; like when they opened their doors to a teenager who needed a place to stay and a stable environment. They mentored him, helped him find a job, get his schooling and finances in order, and ultimately get accepted into college. While raising three young children, they didn’t hesitate to help someone that could use their resources and support.

This is just one of many examples of how Erick has helped other struggling teens in various ways, and I think this speaks to the type of person he is and his desire to build a healthier community. Erick supports others through his actions, not just words.

I have strong confidence in Erick’s ability to listen, understand, and clearly advocate for the issues the community faces. He will be a great representative for District 38!
