Letter: Nonpartisan candidate forums for legislative offices and supervisors

Jasper County League of Women Voters have scheduled a Candidate Forum for 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Newton High School Auditorium. Last year in October, the Jasper League coordinated a forum for the school board election with 8 candidates. It was well received by the community.

This year the candidates for State Senate District 19, State Representative House District 37 and 38 and Jasper County Supervisors have been invited to the Oct. 20 event.

Jasper County League has been holding candidate forums for more than 40 years with both candidate support and community enthusiasm. Candidates running for office are applying for a job. Forums are the job interviews and voters are hiring. Declining an opportunity to discuss important issues is contrary to Jasper County public interest. If candidates choose not to participate, it is the voters who are harmed.

The Democratic candidates have confirmed their participation. We are waiting to hear from our Republican candidates and welcome their presence. The Candidate Forum will be held regardless of a few candidates declining.

Our Mission for League-Empowering voters and defending Democracy.

League is a nonpartisan grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. We empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education and litigation at the local, state and national levels.
