Jane Kathryn Odland, beloved mother, wife, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, at the age of 69. Jane was born in Osage, IA on November 14, 1955, to Robert and Jean (Mathre) Biederman. She grew up on the family farm and was active in 4-H and high school Band. After graduating from Osage High School in 1974, she attended Iowa State University, receiving her bachelor’s degree in biology in 1977. It was during this time that she met Kenneth Odland; they were married in 1978. In 1980, she received her Medical Technologist degree. In 1981, she started working as a letter carrier for the Newton Post Office. With the birth of her son, Nathan, in 1987, she began her duties as a dedicated mother. Kendra and Michael followed, completing her family. She completed law degree from the University of Iowa in 2004 and started her career as an attorney. Throughout her life, she touched the hearts of everyone she met.
Known for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering support for those she loved, Jane dedicated her life to her family and community. She was a source of strength and encouragement, always ready with an open ear and a helping hand.
Jane shared with Ken her farm roots and Scandinavian traditions. She loved bird watching, gardening, cooking, attending Family YMCA camp, and sharing stories from family adventures.
Jane is survived by her mother, Jean Biederman of Newton; her husband, Ken Odland of Newton; her sons, Nathan Odland of Shakopee, MN, and Michael (Hope) Odland of Ankeny; and her daughter, Kendra (Justin) Sorenson of Sheboygan, WI; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Biederman, and her brothers, Phil and Dave Biederman.
A celebration of life for Jane will be held at First Lutheran Church in Newton on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. The family will be at the church to greet guests from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. There will be a lunch at the church directly following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations may be made in Jane’s memory to International Health Partners USA, or to your local YMCA, reflecting Jane’s lifelong commitment to helping others.
Jane Kathryn Odland will be deeply missed, but her spirit of kindness, love, and generosity will continue to inspire all who knew her.
