Glenn Edwin Vanderpol

Glenn Edwin Vanderpol was born on May 21, 1939, near Killduff, Iowa. He was the oldest of three children that were born to John Arthur Vanderpol and Wilma (Van Wyk) Vanderpol.

Glenn suffered from Stills disease as a teenager and out of faith his parents moved the entire family to California. They spent two and a half years in Redlands, CA and his disease got much better. Glenn came back to Sully in the spring of his junior year. Glenn graduated from Lynnville-Sully High School in Sully, Iowa with the class of 1957. He then attended Central College in Pella, Iowa for two years.

Glenn was introduced to Thelma Louise Jansen, a daughter of Henry G. and Cora (Harthoorn) Jansen and they dated for two years. On August 31, 1961, Glenn and Thelma were united in marriage at the Sully Christian Reformed Church in Sully. Glenn and Thelma lived northwest of Sully for 15 years and moved to the home place south of Sully in 1976 where Glenn remained until 2018. It was during this time that Glenn lost the love of his life to carcinoma on May 11, 2017. Glenn moved into Sully before becoming a resident at Newton Village in June of 2024. Glenn and Thelma retired from farming in 1998. Glenn loved all things farming, especially his love for Minneapolis Moline.

On Sunday evening, July 27, 2025, Glenn passed away at Newton Village Skilled Care at the age of 86 years.

Those who cherish his memory are his three children, five grandchildren, four step grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. They are: Michael Wayne Vanderpol of Sully, Iowa; Justin Michael and Paige Verhey, Riley Brooke Verhey, Camdyn Lee Verhey; Carrie Beth and Randy Vander Weerdt of Searsboro, Iowa, Tiffany Ann Matthess, Reece Jacoba Beth Matthess, Taya Jean Matthess, Gunnar Wyatt-Lee Sturkie, Troy Joe and Sydney Sjaardema, Emmett Lynn Sjaardema, Ruthie Lucille Sjaardema, Lucas and Sara Vander Weerdt, Jade Alyce, Taryn Jo, Forrest Buck Vander Weerdt, Shaun and Christa Vander Weerdt, Chloe Laine, Regan Cate, Travis Vander Weerdt, Alex Vander Weerdt, Beaux Meric Vander Weerdt, Matthew Allen and Trisha Vanderpol of Clive, Iowa, Peyton Olivia Vanderpol, Avery Allen Vanderpol. Glenn leaves his two sisters and their husbands, Verna and Kenneth Hackert, Wanda and Melvin Lanser all of Lynnville, Iowa. He also survived by Thelma’s siblings, Donald Jansen and his wife, Karen of Grinnell, Jan and her husband, Ryk De Goey of Sully; along with several nieces and nephews.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, J. Arthur and Wilma (Van Wyk) Vanderpol, twin granddaughters, Madison and Mariah Vanderpol who died infancy; and his parents-in -law, Henry and Cora Jansen, and Thelma’s two siblings, brother, Gene Jansen, who was killed in 1971 and sister, Marjorie Jansen.

Glenn will be remembered as a friend to many and enjoyed talking to people, especially sharing his faith with those he met. He will be missed by many.

A funeral service will be Friday, August 1, 2025 at 10:30 am at the First Reformed Church in Sully, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the First Reformed Church in Sully, Iowa.

Memorial contributions may be designated for First Reformed Church in Sully or Many Hand’s for Haiti.

Interment will be made in the Sully Cemetery
