Shelly Wiese-Smith, 65 of Montezuma, IA and formerly of Newton, IA and Columbia, MO., passed away Thursday afternoon, June 12, 2025 at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines with her daughter by her side. A Celebration of Life Graveside will be held Friday, June 27, 2025 at 1:00 pm at the Newton Memorial Cemetery in Newton. A Reception/Picnic serving many of Shelly’s favorites will follow the graveside at a park in Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to PALS “Poweshiek Animal League Services”. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.
Shelly Rae Wiese-Smith, the daughter of Robert and Darlene (Zierke) Wiese, was born on February 15, 1960, in Worthington, Minnesota. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in Newton, Iowa with the class of 1978. Shelly lived in Columbia, Missouri where she worked a long career at Gerbes Supermarket, serving as the manager for a number of departments. Her favorite department at Gerbes was general merchandise where she loved using her creative abilities to set up the displays, winning many company awards. Shelly married Marvin Smith in 2003.
In 2022, Shelly moved to Montezuma to be closer to her daughter. She loved spending time with her family whenever she had the opportunity. She also enjoyed crafting, birdwatching, collecting seashells, antiquing and thrifting, and built a large and colorful collection of Empoli glass genie bottles. She was extremely fond of her little dogs, especially her dachshund Kipper. Shelly was a great cook and made a mean potato salad that was highly anticipated and greatly enjoyed at family events.
Shelly was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Darlene Wiese and a brother-in-law, Jeff Hill.
She is survived by her daughter, Natalie (Brent) Holland of Montezuma, Iowa; her son, Nathan Bates of Columbia, Mo.; grandchildren, Dylan (Eli) Wilhelm, Kohen Holland, Talen Holland and Ethan Bates; and her siblings, Janice (Jim) Wiese-Fales of New Franklin, Mo., Steven (Norma) Wiese of Sioux Falls, S.D., James (Valerie) Wiese of Ankeny, Iowa, Barbara Hill of Kansas City, Mo. and Bradley Wiese of Omaha, Neb.
