Betty Louise Hummel, 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, Iowa with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation with Betty’s family will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.

Betty was born in Dudley, Iowa on July 31, 1931 to Roy and Bernice Noe. She was a 1949 graduate of Newton High School and a lifelong Newton resident. She married Donald H. Hummel on April 26, 1952.

Betty worked at various jobs in her career including attaining her insurance and real estate licenses. Two of her favorites were as a teller at Jasper County Bank and secretary at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was a longtime member. Betty and Don owned and operated Cliffs Restaurant & Lounge from 1967 to 1979. In her retirement years Betty worked part time for 11 years at H & R Block and did bookkeeping in her home for several small businesses.

Betty was a lifelong member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, member of the Secular Franciscan Order, member of ABWA and held all offices through president, and was businesswoman of the year in 1977. She was also the first FFA Sweetheart in Newton and won the Newton Chamber of Commerce Congeniality Award in 1996. Her greatest love was to have her family gathered around for Sunday meals and games, and to help babysit her grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her seven children, Shari (Dale) Maki, Lynnette (Dan) Fisher, Becky (Matt) Dittmer; Jeff (Karen) Hummel, Dan (Angie) Hummel, David (Kathy) Hummel, and Randy (Linda) Hummel; brother-in-law, Lloyd Ludlow; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; parents; sister, Carol Ludlow; brother, Arden Noe; and granddaughter, Haley Marie Hummel.
