Stephen W. Munson

Stephen W. Munson, age 77 of Monroe, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines.  Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 10:30 am at the Monroe Presbyterian Church.  Burial will be held at Gifford Cemetery at a later date.  Memorials may be directed to the Monroe Presbyterian Church or the Monroe FIre Department.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com

The son of Jerry “Sam” and Mary Alice (Schutts) Munson, Steve was born on August 27, 1945 in Dexter, Iowa.  He graduated from Monroe High School in 1964.  On August 28, 1965, he was united in marriage to Marlys Helen Van Maaren at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton.  Steve, along with Marlys, owned and operated Munson Sinclair in Monroe for many years.  He was a  year member of the Monroe Fire Department, joining in 1969.  Steve was also a longtime member of the Monroe Kiwanis, the Monroe Presbyterian Church and the Monroe American Legion.  Steve enjoyed fishing and spending time at his lake house at Lake Ponderosa.

Those left to honor his memory include his two sons, Lyn (Pamela) Munson and Lee (Ralphi) Munson; nine grandchildren, T.J. Sandin, DeLaney (Cody) De Zwarte, Jac (Caia Niemeyer) Munson, Hung Tong, Mindi (Ryan) Silich, Haleigh (Bryan) Rees, Paige Munson, Jeremiah (Nikki)  Ulrey and Lucas (Cassie) Wells; and seven great grandchildren.  Also surviving are his siblings, Marcia (Robert) Schnug, Marrianne (Tom Henline) Burkhardt, Tom (Beth) Munson and Gary (Darla) Munson and many nieces and nephews.  Preceding Steve in death were his parents and his wife Marlys in 2018.
