Commander (Ret) David I. Scott 85 passed away Friday, January 13, 2023 at McGregor, IA where he lived after retiring. The son of Robert and Hazel (Wilson) Scott (of rural Colfax) he was born May 18, 1937 in Newton, IA. He graduated from Newton High School in 1955 and later from Iowa State University where he met and married Carolyn (Cords) and took up flying.
He pursued his love of flying serving his country in the Army and Coast Guard as a helicopter pilot where he received numerous awards and commendations including 15 Air Medals, 3 Distinguished Flying Cross Medals and a Purple Heart (in Viet Nam).
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, daughter Joan Sokol of Katy, TX, daughter Deborah Scott of McGregor, son Mathew Scott of Madrid, Spain, two grandsons, five great grandchildren, his brother Herbert (Sybil) of rural Kellogg, brother Fred (Susan) of Westby, WI and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law William ”Billy” Sokol.
On Saturday January 21 there will be visitation with the family at 9:00 am followed by Memorial Service at 11:00 am at First Congregational Church in McGregor and internment at Pleasant Grove Cemetery with military honors.
