Charlie, the son of Charles “Chuck” and Josephine “Jo” (Thomas) Shepard, was born on July 12, 1945 in Whitley Bay, England. When Charlie was a little over the age of one, the family moved to Newton, Iowa. Growing up Charlie was active in Boy Scouts. Charlie worked for many years and later retired as an Inspector at the Maytag Company. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the Izaak Walton League. Charlie loved sports and avidly cheered for the San Francisco Giants and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a walking encyclopedia when it came to sports statistics. Charlie enjoyed a trip to the San Francisco area with his friend, Hoyt, where they were able to watch 7 baseball games in 7 days. He also loved to golf.
Around Newton, many people knew and loved Charlie. He had a kind heart and was always accepting of all people. He was very generous to his family and never forgot a birthday or a special occasion. Charlie would walk up to six miles a day and enjoyed the conversations he had with everyone on his route.
