Frederick LeRoy Dimon

Frederick LeRoy Dimon, 77, of Granville County and a longtime resident of Newton, Iowa passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at Duke University Medical Center.

Fred was born in Jasper County, Iowa on May 29, 1944 to the late LeRoy Athea Dimon and Shelda Irene Vestal. Fred graduated from Newton High School in 1962 where his 440-yard relay team held the state record for numerous years. He went to the University of Iowa on a track scholarship, graduating in 1966 ROTC commissioned 2nd Lt. in the USAF. From there he entered the Air Force completing one tour of duty in Vietnam from 1968-1969. Upon completing his service in 1971 with rank of Captain, he returned to Newton. He was united in marriage to Margaret Schutty on April 27, 1973. Throughout his years in Newton he was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Newton Elks B.P.O.E. He also served on the City Council, booster club, and Veteran’s Commission. He enjoyed his time on the golf course with all of his golf buddies and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. In 2021 he and Margaret relocated to Creedmoor, NC to be near their daughter and her family. Spending time with all of them was his greatest joy.

Visitation will be held Sunday, April 24, 2022 from 1:15 – 1:45 PM at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Creedmoor.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of forty-nine years, Margaret Schutty Dimon; one daughter, Michele Dimon Walker and her husband John Briggs; six grandchildren, Madi, Aidan, Jack, Delaney, Kennedy and Tanner; a brother-in-law, Larry Trotter and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Harrington and Barb Trotter and one nephew, Randy Harrington.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, April 24, 2022 at 2:00 PM at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Creedmoor officiated by Priest Padre Leon.
