Richard William Meyer

Richard William Meyer, 88, of Newton, died Monday, July 19, 2021, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the American Legion Post 111 or the Newton Booster Club may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Richard, the son of Fred and Gladys Meyer, was born Feb. 21, 1933, in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in the class of 1951. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955. On Nov. 20, 1955, Richard was united in marriage with Durella Doty at the First Christian Church in Newton. Richard was a farmer for many years, drove school bus and worked at Rock Communications, retiring from there after 21 years. Richard was a member of the First Christian Church, Washer City Good Sam’s Club and the Amboy Grange. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 111. Richard was an avid Newton Cardinals fan, “once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal.” He also enjoyed collecting toy tractors. 

Richard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Durella Meyer; children, Teresa (Wayne) Penning, Darin (Barb) Meyer and Todd (Teresa) Meyer; grandchildren, Malissa Munger (Eric Vander Velden), Brady (Courtney) Penning, Caitlyn Meyer (Mike Bastow), Courtney (Morgan) Johnson, Clay Meyer, Zachary Meyer and Alec Meyer; his great-grandchildren, Zane, Laney, Charley, Moonie, Collins and Kashton. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Barbara Detrick.
