Jasper County puts 0.22-acre parcel up for sale

Public hearing for the sale of property along Hickory Street is scheduled Jan. 6

Jasper County has been unsuccessful in trying to sell an abandoned property it had acquired and then cleaned up. Supervisors on Feb. 20 voted 6-0 to reject a $6,700 bid to purchase the property, citing it was too low a price for the $16,000 the county put into the property trying to clean it up.

Supervisors are once again trying to sell a piece of property near Lambs Grove that was abated by Jasper County two years ago. The board of supervisors last week set a public hearing for the sale at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 6, 2026 in their chambers of the county courthouse. The property is at 248 Hickory St.

When supervisors first tried to sell the property back in February 2024, they disagreed over the purchase price. The bid back then was $6,700, which was its assessed value at the time. But officials said it was too low a price for the $16,000 the county already put into it trying to clean it up.

Supervisor Brandon Talsma was adamant back then that the county’s property abatement program should sustain itself by at least breaking even. The lone bidder on the property, Buddy Cupples, had even submitted higher bids. He was willing to go as high as $10,000 at one point. Still, supervisors could not agree.

According to the county’s GIS software, the 0.22-acre property is residentially zoned and has not increased too much in assessed value since the last time it was for sale. The lot size is 48 feet by 195 feet, making it around 9,360 square feet.
