April’s Diner to close Dec. 21 after 3 years in business

‘We’ve been blessed to be part of such a wonderful community’

April's Diner, a downtown Newton restaurant located in the ground floor of Hotel Maytag, has announced that it will be allowing its lease to expire and will be closing by Dec. 21. The restaurant had been in business for about three years.

April’s Diner, a downtown Newton restaurant, has announced it will be closing its doors for good just a few days before Christmas.

In a Facebook post, the restaurant said its three-year journey has been uplifting and staff were thankful for the opportunity to share it with Newton. The lease to the restaurant is expiring, and April’s Diner made the “empowering decision” to not renew its lease. The last day the diner will be open is Dec. 21.

“We will be listing the business as for sale, and if anyone is interested, please feel free to reach out to us,” April’s Diner said in the Dec. 10 Facebook post, adding that staff appreciated the guests who have made the diner “the best breakfast restaurant in Newton” with 4-star ratings on Google.

The tenants of Hotel Maytag were also recognized for making the days brighter, and the diner praised building manager Mike Hansen for resolving past issues.

“We’ve been blessed to be part of such a wonderful community,” the diner said. “Thank you all for your continued support.”

April’s Diner took over the space previously filled by Midtown Cafe, a downtown Newton restaurant that had been serving customers for more than five decades. Midtown Cafe closed in November 2021 but had its breakfast menu revived at the local Maid-Rite, known colloquially as the Mid-Rite menu.

Filling the void left behind by Midtown Cafe, April’s Diner similarly served a menu of homestyle breakfasts, hearty specials and simple-yet-flavorful dinner dishes.
