On Wednesday, Oct. 29, 10 members of the Newton FFA headed to Indianapolis, Ind., to celebrate the 98th National Convention and Expo with almost 73,000 other people. On the way there, the group stopped at the John Deere pavilion in Moline, Ill. When they got to Indianapolis, they got to go to the Three Hills Rodeotheheld at the Indiana State Fairgrounds just for FFA members during the National FFA Convention.
On Thursday, the group got up early and headed to Lucas Oil for the First General Session of the convention to hear motivational speakers and get prepared for the rest of the week. After the Session the group got to go and look around the expo center and talk to different companies with an agriculture background and learn more about agriculture. They also got to go and talk to different colleges that were there promoting. Then the group went and watched the National talent show, which ranged from singing to dancing. The group then watched another general session, listened to an officer retirement speech and watched numbers chapter and FFA members receive awards for their project and learn how to better the chapter.
On Friday, The group started the day going and learning about agritourism by going to an apple orchard/ pumpkin patch. Getting to have fun and play around with all of the activities. Then they got to go and learn from the owner how he keeps his business going all year round. The group got to learn more about how the business started and how they have expanded to fit the needs of their community. After the farm, they got to go back to the convention and spend more time looking around the expo. Then went and watched another session that was part of the Band and Chorus concert and got to listen to an additional officer retirement speech.
On Saturday, the group got to go and cheer on two former members Khryssa Anderson and Tyler Guy when they walked the stage to receive their American degree. The American degree is the highest degree an FFA member can get. Less than 1 percent of members receive it. The Newton group headed back to Iowa after a week full of lots of learning and a lot more laughter and fun.
