Newton City Council awarded the bid to construct a new public safety storage building for the police and fire departments. The city council approved the bid in a 6-0 vote after an Oct. 6 public hearing, which garnered no opposition from citizens and no discussion from elected officials.
The storage space will house loose equipment and reserve vehicles. Both the fire and police departments worked with Tometich Engineering to prepare plans and specifications for the proposed storage building. The 40-foot-by-80-foot post-frame building has 14-foot sidewalls and a pitched roof.
According to city documents, the building will be constructed by the current Newton WaterWorks building at 500 W. Seventh St. N.
Five bids were received by the city for this project, which included a base bid and an additional alternative bid. The top three bids included: Pro-Line Building Company with a total bid of $235,974; Burkett Construction with a bid of $308,656; and Accurate Commercial with a bid of $334,679.80.
The lowest responsible bidder was identified as Pro-Line Building Company. The engineer’s estimate for the project — without interior finishes — was $253,200.
The completion date for the project is June 30, 2026.
