Annual CWS/CROP Walk for Hunger

By Barry Hurto/Special to Newton News

The annual CWS/CROP Walk to help alleviate hunger in the world’s worst-afflicted areas, will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5. As of this date, approximately 12 churches from around the county will be participating, commencing on the west side of the Jasper County Courthouse in Newton. It is an ecumenical project with all interested persons welcome and is ideal as a family and/or athletic event.

“Pre-registration will begin at 1:30 p.m.,” Hurto said. “The traditional route covering approximately three miles will be used. Congregations may also choose to designate their own route at their convenience if preferred. Participants will gather pledges from their friends and colleagues, to be made payable to CWS/CROP, which is headquartered out of Elkhart, Ind., and turned in on the day of the walk.”

Anyone who would like to participate can contact Hurto at beh050219@gmail.

“With global warming and natural disasters increasing each year, there is more need than ever before. I would encourage anyone wanting more information to visit the website at Church World Service. The bonus is that a percentage of the total pledges made will come back to Jasper County’s local food banks,” Hurto said.

“A reception honoring the participants will be in Latham Hall at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church following the event.”
