Two traffic signals on First Avenue West in Newton are not operational at this time, and the city administrator says it is likely due to a lightning strike.
The two traffic signals that are currently malfunctioning are located at the First Avenue West and West Third Street intersection and the First Avenue West and West Fourth Street intersection. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler told local media that the signals are not flashing red and completely turned off.
In response, the city has installed four-way stops at each of the intersections. Staff is currently working to further diagnose the situation and develop a plan to repair the lights. Due to the extensive damage, early indications suggest it could be an extended period of time before the signals are operational.
“City staff is doing everything we can to make this repair as soon as possible,” Muckler said. “In the meantime, motorists are encouraged to drive cautiously through this area.”
