It’s that time of year again — and it’s about dang time, too!

Bowlful of Blues returns noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31 on the Maytag Bowl stage in Maytag Park, 301 S. 11th Ave. W., in Newton. The gates open at 11 a.m. Presented by the South Skunk Blues Society, the all-day music festival features near-nonstop music. And not just any ol’ music; we’re talking blues, friends.

The lineup this year consists of Ghost Town Blues Band, Mandalyn and The Hunters, Sean Chambers & Savoy Brown Rhythm Section and Hector Anchondo. Performing between sets is Jeni Grouws (of the Avey Grouws Band fame) and Dave DuCharme-Jones.

Food trucks will be at the park, but patrons are encouraged to bring coolers with their own drinks (no glass). Kids activities are available, along with raffles and a silent auction. Advanced tickets are available at Hy-Vee and Mattingly Music in Newton, The Vinyl Stop in Grinnell and Zzz Records in Des Moines.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $35 at the gate. Individuals under age 12 enter free. No refunds.

Ghost Town Blues Band, this year’s headliner, is a Tennessee-based blues rock band that was formed in 2009. The band’s music has topped blues charts and has been lauded for its musicianship. Matt Isbell, the frontman, is also a prolific cigar box guitar maker. Don’t know what that is? Come to the bowl and find out.
