Questers present award at fair
The Sunbonnet Questers of Newton presented their 4-H Restoration and Preservation awards at the Jasper County Fair.
Quester is an international organization whose members promote the study, preservation and restoration of older items for future generations. Judy Swenson and Nancy Egnozzi awarded certificates, medals and cash awards to three area 4-H members for their work on preservation projects
The first place winner was Trinity Ann Hanson from the Sherman Sunbeam Club. Trinity is a 12th grader. She restored a hall table discarded by the side of the road. It was painted and needed repairs. Trinity stripped the paint from the piece, sanded it, stained it, gave it an oil finish and sealed it. New knobs were added to the drawers. After much hard work the discarded piece of history has a new finish and a whole new life
The second place winner was Landon Meyer from the Sherman Sunbeam club. Landon is a fifth grader. Landon restored and preserved two unique pieces from his family. The first is a sign that his great-grandpa made for his grandma. It had broken letters that needed to be replaced. He also sanded and refinished it to withstand the weather. The other project was the damage hatchet from his great-grandpa. The hatchet had a broken handle that needed to be replaced and the bit which is the cutting edge of the hatchet needed to be cleaned and sharpened. On cleaning the bit a stamp of Brown and Hurley Co. of Des Moines 1866-1913 was found. Both restorations as well as learning skills add meaningful treasures to his family.
The third place winner is Harrison Rhone, of the Poweshiek Partners Club. Harrison is a 12th grader. He has restored and preserved a cedar chest that had been stored in their barn since 1958. He has rebuilt the chest top, stripped, sanded and varnished the chest to give it a whole new life. He hopes this will be a piece to be handed down within his family
It was a joy for the Questers to see the many wonderful 4-H projects and especially the awarded Restoration and Preservation winning entries.
