Since 2019, the Jasper County Fair has featured a unique event that brings a lot of good vibes. The Friendship Show, created by Codi De Bruin, pairs individuals with disabilities with youth volunteers from 4H or FFA to learn about animals at the fair and take part in special show in the pavilion.
Killduff Hotshots 4H Club and Diamond Trail FFA member Rylee DeHaai has participated in the Friendship Show for the past three years. The happiness it brings to everyone involved keeps bringing her back year after year.
“It gives those who aren’t really able to show the animals a chance,” DeHaai said. “It is so much fun seeing them have the big smiles on their faces when they are with the animals. You get to walk around, ask them questions, learn about them and learn their favorite animals. It is so fun to do.”
The friends show a variety of animals including rabbits and sheep, taking their turn in the rings either holding the animals or leading them around the pavilion like at a formal livestock show. They also get to share the names of the animals and what their favorite part of the fair is.
The show is designed for those 10 to 21 years old with disabilities to get the experience of raising and showing livestock. De Bruin, who still runs the show, said they are always looking for new participants each year.
“We’re always looking for more friends to sign up and keep growing this opportunity,” De Bruin said.
