Kellogg man charged for killing dog and being a felon in control of firearm

Sheriff’s office was called to report of animal abuse and a gunshot in town

Two individuals have been arrested on felony charges after authorities responded to a call in Kellogg of animal abuse and the discharge of a firearm.

According to a press release from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, police had received a report at 9:45 p.m. July 6 of someone actively abusing a dog and hearing a gunshot in the 300 block of East Street in Kellogg. Police located an injured dog and contacted the residents Kerry Quick and Justice Goodwin.

Upon further investigation, a search warrant of the residence was executed resulting in the discovery of a firearm, drugs and drug paraphernalia.

The dog was taken by Jasper County Animal Control to an area veterinarian to treat head injuries suffered from a blunt object. The sheriff’s office on July 7 posted an update to the dog’s condition, confirming that it had died from its injuries. X-rays showed the dog was shot in the head.

Quick, 32, and Goodwin, 28, were taken into custody and transported to Jasper County Jail awaiting initial appearance on a number of charges.

Quick was charged with control of a firearm as a felon (Class D felony), animal abuse (aggravated misdemeanor), possession of marijuana-second offense (serious misdemeanor) and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor). Quick had a bond of $8,300 but it reduced to $5,000.

Goodwin was charged with possession of a controlled substance-third offense (Class D felony) and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor). Goodwin had a bond of $5,300 but it reduced to $2,500. The sheriff’s office noted all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
