Newton nonprofit hosts fifth annual Run For Her Life 5K/Half-Marathon

Phoenix Phase Initiative continues efforts to help women rescued from trafficking

The Phoenix Phase Initiative hosted its fourth annual Run For Her Life 5K and half-marathon on May 11 in downtown Newton. The nonprofit has consistently seen high attendance at its yearly run to raise money to fight against human trafficking in Uganda.

It has been five years since the Phoenix Phase Initiative debuted its inaugural Run For Her Life 5K/Half-Marathon, and the support keeps going strong. The fifth annual run returns Saturday, May 17 at Legacy Plaza, with the half-marathon beginning at 8 a.m. and the 5K starting at 9 a.m.

Participants receive a free beer from Gezellig Brewing Company and can enjoy live music from the Washer City Agitators after the run. Jana’s Snack Shack and Tropical Sno will also be on-site for after-run meals. Collin Barnes, co-founder of Phoenix Phase Initiative, said the nonprofit has a goal of raising $200,000.

Funds go toward the construction of a training center for sexually trafficked women in Uganda. Phoenix Phase Initiative aims to provide occupational training, trauma counseling and financial management courses so that these women can have a fresh start. It’s been a challenge these past five years.

“It has definitely not been easy, but we are so thankful to the businesses and individuals who have supported us,” Barnes said. “Next year the run might look a little different because we are adapting and growing and trying to find new ways to raise funds for this important mission.”
