October Monthly Mystery Bag

Wondering what to read next? Check out our FREE monthly mystery bags for adults! Mystery bags have a different theme every month and contain a surprise selection of 4-5 books and an adult craft. Return the books when you’re done with them - keep the craft! The October theme is “Thrills & Chills” and includes a selection of thrillers, mysteries, and spooky books just in time for Halloween. The craft is a painted coffin candy box. Registration opens Sept. 26. Please direct message the library on Facebook or call 641-792-4108 to register. Ages 18+.

Introvert Book Club

Want to join a book club but just don’t have the time for a regular meeting? This is the book club for you! Each month there’s a new book selection, but there’s never a meeting. Pick up your copy of the book of the month at the library information desk. The October selection is “Practical Magic” by Alice Hoffman.

Gory Stories Book Club

Oct. 3, noon

Do you love true crime? Bring your lunch and join other true crime addicts to share our favorite podcasts, documentaries, books, and more! The October book selection is, “Bitter Harvest” by Ann Rule. Copies of the book can be picked up at the library information desk.

Borrow a Librarian: Drop-In Photo Digitizing

Oct. 10, 9 – 11:30 a.m.

Now is the perfect time to start scanning those old family photos! Drop-in on the second Monday morning of the month to learn about our Memory Lab Digitization Equipment and have our Public Services Librarian scan your photos. Attendees may bring up to 15 photos per visit and a flash drive to store their scans on. The Newton Public Library Memory Lab is made possible through the generosity of the Jasper Community Foundation.

DIY @ the Library: Decorative Autumn Birdhouse

Oct. 10, 5:30 p.m.

Paint a decorative autumn (or Halloween!) birdhouse at this fun, in-person crafting program. All materials will be provided, attendees are encouraged to bring an apron or wear clothes to paint in. Registration opens Oct. 3. Please call the library at 641-792-4108 to register. Ages 18 and up.

Teen Glow in the Dark Pumpkins

Oct. 11, 5:30 p.m.

Teens in grades 5 – 12 are invited to decorate a glow in the dark pumpkin at this fun craft program. Call the library at 641-792-4108 to register.

Sit ‘n Stitch

Oct. 12, 10 a.m.

Enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, or bring your own beverage, while working on your current stitching project. Stitchers of all experience levels are welcome! This is an open forum for crafters to share their projects, ask other stitchers for assistance or troubleshooting, and enjoy crafting company. This event will be held in the library meeting room. No registration required.

Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Entries Accepted Oct. 17 – 20

Our annual kid’s pumpkin decorating contest is back! Decorate a pumpkin or gourd as your favorite book character. Pumpkins may be painted, dressed, or accessorized, but not carved. The public will vote for winners Oct. 21-29, with winners announced on Oct. 31! Winners in each category will receive a Halloween treat basket!
