A unique shop full of wonder

Elm St. Oddities and Collectibles now open in Colfax

Elm St. Oddities and Collectibles is not the run-of-the-mill shop. But if you like classic horror films, the latest super hero movies, odd and ends or a unique gift, a stop in Colfax is the place to go.

Now open at 116 N. Walnut St., Elm St. recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony, welcoming customers to check out all that is available.

“We’ve always been long-time collectors of toys, ever since we were kids.,” owner Harpo Dunaway said.

Dunaway, along with his wife Day, happened to be going to Newton for a house warming party of a friend when they made a pit stop in Colfax. While at Casey’s on the north side of town, they decided to explore the community and instantly fell in love.

“She said let’s just drive through the town while we’re here and we did and fell in love,” Dunaway said. “It is quiet, that’s what we like about it.”

The couple then had the opportunity to move their screen printing business into the Colfax building, which also came with an empty front shop. With the space available, they decided to open Elm St.

“We do some big conventions but we also do screen printing and when we were able to move in here and have the screen printing in the back and have a store front up here, let’s take all of our toys out of the garage and put them out here,” Dunaway said. “It has been good, we have had a lot of good feedback.”

Filled with ‘90s vintage memorabilia, pop culture items, comic books, action figures, candy, clothing and more, Elm St. is full with eye-candy that will keep you in the shop for hours. Walking in you are greeted by Star Wars’ Darth Vader before running into Michael Myers from Halloween, Beetle Juice or the Ghostbusters. Open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, it has something for everyone.

“We wanted to keep as much ‘80s and ‘90s, we’re ‘80s and ‘90s kids and it is also really popular right now with conventions all over,” Dunaway said. “We have some cool pieces I am happy to have.”
