The condition of a construction worker who was injured in an accident Aug. 18 on Interstate 80 is currently unknown at this time. The accident occurred at approximately 9:52 a.m. Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty said.
The sheriff’s office received a 911 call about a construction accident near mile marker 176 of westbound Interstate 80. The initial report said a worker had been run over by a construction machine but was awake and breathing.
Construction workers at the scene were able to remove the machine from the worker and provide assistance before emergency services arrived. The Kellogg Fire and EMS Department, Newton Fire and EMS Department, Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Iowa State Patrol and sheriff’s office responded to the scene.
The accident did not happen in the traveled portion of the roadway, instead in the area where the new road and bridge are under construction.
The worker was treated at the scene and later flown to a Des Moines area hospital by Mercy Air.
