Bison Day is back

Mark your calendars for a fun, free, family-friendly annual event — Bison Day returns at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge Saturday. Activities will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your friends and family and join us in the celebration of bison, learn about our tallgrass prairie heritage, view the herd of 70 bison (including 11 bison calves) and participate in bison-themed activities.

While the event will be smaller-scale than previous years, there will still be numerous ways to fill your day, including bison stickers; making a bison charm craft; bison coloring pages; playing a ring toss game; taking group photos in our bison photo booth area; and going on a bison trivia themed self-guided walk on the 1/2 mile Overlook Loop Trail. There will also be a 2-mile guided hike of the Tallgrass Trail led by the Iowa Walking Club that will meet at 10 a.m. at the Visitor Center.

No food will be available for sale, but there are indoor and outdoor eating areas, so feel free bring a picnic lunch with you and enjoy the day’s festivities.
