Sunbonnet Questers

The Sunbonnet Questers of Newton awarded their fourth annual 4-H Restoration Awards at the Jasper County Fair July 19.

Questers is an international organization whose members promote the preservation and restoration of items for future generations. Charlotte Townsend, Nancy Egnozzi and Joanne Price of the Sunbonnet Chapter awarded certificates, medals and cash awards to three area 4-H members for their work on preservation projects. The first place winner received $25, second place $10 and third place $10.

The first place winner was Karly Spear, a sixth grader and member of Jolly Workers. She restored a 19th-century steamer trunk that was a family heirloom. She also restored some items that were stored in the trunk.

The second place winner was Caleb Leonard, a fifth grader and member of Sherman Sunbeams, who restored a child’s metal wagon that connects to his dad’s John Deere pedal tractor which had been previously restored.

The third place winner was Ben Leonard, an eighth grader and member of Sherman Sunbeams, who restored an unusual oil jar that was surrounded by a metal holder that was very damaged. He found this oil jar in a family barn.
