Iowa State University Extension and Outreach county offices in the south central area announced award recipients for outstanding achievements in 2021.
Jasper, Mahaska and Marion County Extension Councils received the County Extension Council Distinguished Service award for modeling exemplary practices in management and community engagement. The three counties worked across county lines to develop and implement a successful COVID recovery initiative. They made a financial commitment to stimulate the local economies and provide a continued positive impact in their communities.
Carol Camp, Jasper County, received the Pride of Extension award. Camp, Jasper County Horticulturist & Master Gardener Coordinator, has successfully promoted food security through education and engagement of the community. She led 20 volunteers dedicated to contributing to the Community Garden, which provided fresh produce to those in need. This past year, more than 2,900 pounds of produce assisted more than 300 families. This was made possible by expanding the garden, working with community partners and volunteers, and planning for the future.
Catherine Lents, Poweshiek County, received the Excellence in Partnership to Iowans award. Serving as executive director of Poweshiek County Extension for 12 years, Lents has exemplified the ISU Extension Mission by creating and sustaining partnerships between Poweshiek Extension and the community. Whether addressing the aftermath of a major storm, putting money back into the economy through the VITA program or developing future leaders, Cathy and the community partners help meet the needs of people and improve quality of life.
