A bicyclist died from his injuries sustained in a car collision Sept. 23 in Newton.

Mark W. Adkins, 58, of Newton, was reportedly driving his bicycle at night down the middle of the road near the 3200 block of Highway S-74 South when the driver of a Ford Escape struck him. Jasper County Dispatch was called about the accident at approximately 7:35 p.m. and was told there were injuries.

Iowa State Patrol told Newton News that Adkins’ bicycle did not have any sort of rear reflection or light. Paramedics from the Newton Fire Department responded to the scene, as well as deputies from the sheriff’s office. Upon arrival it was determined that due to Adkin’s injuries a helicopter was needed for transport.

First responders provided CPR and were able to get a pulse. Adkins was flown to a Des Moines hospital where he was pronounced dead. Iowa State Patrol was called to assist in the investigation.
