Quilts of Valor club presents first set of quilted creations to area veterans at fair

SYMBOLS OF APPRECIATION: Local youth showcase patriotic quilts at Jasper County Fair

The first Quilts of Valor 4-H and FFA club presented their quilted creations to 20 veterans during a Sunday afternoon ceremony at the Jasper County Fair. The young quilters showcased their hardwork to a large crowd beneath the shade of the big tent and then handed them over to select veterans.

Organizers say the quilting process — from the initial planning to the long-arm work — took about six months to finish. Volunteers from around the county dedicated countless hours to teach the young club members of 4-H and FFA this creative-yet-difficult life skill.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation was founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts. These quilts symbolize and promote a message of healing. Quilts of Valor must be quilted by hand or machine and must be “awarded” to veterans as thanks for their service, sacrifice and valor in serving our nation.
