Colfax Historical Society

The Nov. 20 meeting of the Colfax Historical Society was called to order at 7 p.m. by president Kevin Williams and he thanked everyone for attending. Members present were: BJ Williams, Karen Russell, Judy Sullivan, Steve and Cindy L. Van Dusseldorp, Stanley Daft, Larry and Charlet Daft, Aaron Bartholmey, Rachel Wilty, Joyce Jessen, Peggy Dvorak, and facility manager Tranquillity Smith. Minutes of the Oct. 16 meeting was read. Treasurer’s report was presented.

We received two Thank You notes: 1. From Chapter BA P.E.O. for the use of our lovely facility, plus Tranquillity for her help in opening and closing and making sure the building was secure and clean. They are very thankful to have this community center. 2. From the Iowa Welsh Society as Kevin gave the group a very informative tour of our museum, along with a $100 donation. In turn, we sent them a Thank You note for the donation.

Facility manager Tranquillity distributed her report to all the members present. She also said everything was going good with the rentals and she follows up frequently, with no problems.

The Election Day Soup Supper was Tuesday, Nov. 7 in our community room from 4:30 to 7 p.m. We had soup, crackers, veggies, dessert and drinks. There was a free will donation. Committee in charge was: Peggy, Cindy L., Mary Dell Flattery and Rachel Wilty. Desserts were donated and several volunteered helped. We received $527.45 from donations and $62 in the gift shop. We had a good crowd and almost ran out of the soups.

We again this year, decorated a Christmas tree to be displayed at the Jasper County Museum in December. The volunteers for this project were Steve and Cindy L. Van Dusseldorp and Peggy. They were thanked for their efforts.

The insurance was discussed and it has gone up considerably more, so Peggy will be contacting the insurance company for more information so we can make an informed decision at our next meeting.

Cindy L. and Joyce are going to participate in the Colfax Country Christmas to be Saturday, Dec. 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. in downtown Colfax. They will be handing out candy.

The museum will be open on the second Saturday of the month on Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The volunteers will be Charlet and Cindy L. from 10 a.m. to noon and from noon to 2 p.m. will be Kevin and BJ. Admission is free.

Additional comments: A big congratulations to Aaron for winning the title of “Largest collection in the world from Guinesss World Records.” The previous total was 24,000 pencils and Aaron had 69,255 pencils. We now have a showcase of his achievement in the museum.

Next meeting will be Monday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. It is open to anyone who would like to attend.
