Festival of Trees still rooted in its traditions

4-H groups decorate themed trees inspired by charities, other organizations

Sure the giant Christmas tree in the rotunda of the Jasper County Courthouse is cool and all, but the smaller trees scattered around the property are just as eye-catching — maybe even more so. What they lack in size they more than make up for in creative decorations, which its what makes Festival of Trees so special.

Well, that and the fact that they're made by our local 4-H groups.

Indeed, these festive saplings normally draw large crowds to the courthouse. When they’re not shouting out the countdown for the courthouse lighting ceremony, folks are usually touring through the building to see what kinds of themed trees the 4-H kiddos have adorned this year.

Although crowds won’t be gathering inside the courthouse this year, locals can still explore the building through much of December. According to the Jasper County 4-H monthly newsletter, groups began setting up on Nov. 23. All groups were asked to wear masks and social distance when entering the courthouse.

Traditionally, the groups decorate their trees in support of a chosen charity or organization. Stacey Wilson, the Jasper County Youth Coordinator with the ISU Extension & Outreach office, has told Newton News in the past that the festival helps showcase community service and citizenship activities.
